Your Name Might Shape Your Face

A computer analysis found that people with the same name were more likely to share a stereotypical “look” to them…. similar expressions around their eyes and mouths, areas of the face.

In one experiment, scientists found that when people are shown a stranger’s face and a choice of five names, they pick the right name about 35 percent of the time.

That’s actually pretty good. According to a psychologist at Brock University in Canada, “Random chance would be 20 percent.” Though she says that more work needs to be done before she’s convinced another reason, like that some name options are unpopular, isn’t responsible for the result.

The team ran several more experiments with different conditions and continued finding that study participants – and one computer algorithm – could reliably match names to faces.

And in another experiment, the researchers trained a computer to find similarities in thousands of faces of people with the same name. The algorithm found that people with the same name tend to have similarities around their eyes or at the corners of their mouths. “You can see it’s the places with different expressions or most of our expressions”. Using that information, the robot could match a face to the correct name about 60 percent of the time when given two options.
Researchers speculate that people might be using their facial muscles to conform appearance to name. Imagine someone with the name “Joy,” for instance. “The moment she’s born, her parents and society treat her in a way that befits that name. The say, you really are so joyful, smiling just like your name. She develops a certain look maybe because she is smiling more because of all the positive feedback she gets when she smiles.”

It may also be that people mold their names to fit them. A psychologist and neuroscientist was told her first name didn’t fit her. So she used her middle name. “That may be because they weren’t matching the stereotype.”

However, there could be other explanations for the correlation between faces and names.

For one, maybe it’s that one or two of the five names the researchers chose were unpopular or a terrible match for the face that study participants saw. “Nobody would pick [those], but picked the other three names equally often, then they would still pick my name about 35 percent of the time.”

Teach Yourself To Be Happy!

We can improve our emotional well-being with self-guided imagery training.

Researchers say if we remember a negative interaction, it can cause current anxiety, which can affect current mood and functioning.

But they say by learning to use imagery training at home, we can fight off those negative feelings to become happier and more efficient without the help of ongoing therapy.

Tooth Fairy’s Cash Payouts Hit All-Time High

The Tooth Fairy is feeling a bit more generous these days. According to Delta Dental’s 13th annual Tooth Fairy survey, cash payouts have soared to an all-time high average of $4.66. That’s a 75-cent increase from 2015.

The Tooth Fairy’s generosity has historically been a good indicator of the economy. The poll shows the Tooth Fairy’s cash payout increase is within a percentage point of the S&P 500’s.

Last year, the Tooth Fairy paid about $290.6 million in the U.S. for lost teeth, a 13.5% increase from 2015. Cash payouts for a first lost tooth are up about 10% to $5.72. First-tooth payouts are typically higher than average.

By region, Tooth Fairy payouts are highest in the West: $5.96 ($6.89 for the first tooth); followed by the Northeast at $5.08 ($6.31); the South at $4.57 ($4.88); and the Midwest at $4.04 ($5.70).

What It Means When You Dream About Being Naked In Public

You’re at the office and everything is normal, until you get up during a meeting to give a presentation and you realize you are totally naked.

It’s a dream many people have had, but experts still aren’t entirely sure what it means.

Most psychologists agree it probably doesn’t represent a literal desire to be naked in public, but more likely is related to being embarrassed about something about yourself that other people don’t know about you.

Other psychologists have suggested this type of dream comes from harboring feelings of guilt or inferiority, or it may be triggered by feeling neglected or deprived of attention in the past.

Of course some people think it means nothing at all. But neuroscientists and psychologists are convinced that, apart from meaning, dreams serve an important
role in maintaining our mental and emotional health.

Decades of research suggest that dreams help us make memories, solve the problems we struggle with in our waking hours and process emotions.

To Live Longer: You Should Eat 10 Portions of Fruit and Veggies

While five portions of fruit and veggies a day is good for you, eating 10 is dramatically better.

Researchers say eating above the five-a-day suggestion shows major benefit in reducing the chance of heart attack, stroke, cancer and early death.

The research team found that the greatest benefit comes from eating 800g a day, which is about ten portions.

The team estimates that approximately 7.8 million premature deaths worldwide could be potentially prevented every year if people ate 10 portions.

Scarlett Johansson, Opens Up About Marriage Split, Says It’s “Not Natural” to Be Monogamous

Scarlett Johansson doesn’t think it’s ‘natural’ to be monogamous.

The 32-year-old actress shared her thoughts on marriage as she confirmed reports that she has split from her second husband, Romain Dauriac, with whom she has a two-year-old daughter Rose.

She told the new issue of Playboy, “I think the idea of marriage is very romantic; it’s a beautiful idea, and the practice of it can be a very beautiful thing. I don’t think it’s natural to be a monogamous person.”

She says, “I might be skewered for that, but I think it’s work. It’s a lot of work. And the fact that it is such work for so many people—for everyone—the fact of that proves that it is not a natural thing… It’s something I have a lot of respect for and have participated in, but I think it definitely goes against some instinct to look beyond.”
Scarlett was previously married to “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds, who is married to Blake Lively.
