A study has found almost two-thirds of tuna sold at restaurants and stores in the U.S. is actually another type of fish called escolar.

Eating the fish can lead to serious stomach cramps and dangerous levels of diarrhea. (Escolar eat a fatty acid called ester which humans can’t digest)

Southern California was the worst offender with 52% of the state’s “tuna cans” not containing any tuna.

The study also found 74% of sushi venues are guilty of using escolar instead of tuna, compared to 38% of restaurants and 18% of grocery stores.
